The Roads Through Devon

Devon’s roads bend to land closely, winding between ancient hedges and deep green banks.

Devon has more miles of lane and hedge than any other county, most are medieval or older. Visitors often find the tiny narrow roads disconcerting, but soon get practised at reversing to a passing place. Often the lanes feel sunken, either because they are ancient trackways carved into the countryside and worn down over time, or because of the hedgebanks on each side.

Hedges and banks marked ownership in a way that benefitted domestic and wild animals. Sheep and cattle enjoy protection from sun, wind and rain whilst birds and wildlife use hedges as corridors and homes.
